Step-by-Step Guide To Selecting a Ripe Pineapple
Step 1- Check the color of pineapple skin – The skin should be yellowish gold in color with no white or brown areas. The higher the yellow reaches on the pineapple, the more even the flavor will be throughout the fruit.
Step 2- Look at and feel the texture of the pineapple- A wrinkled texture means the fruit has deteriorated inside, feel the pineapple make sure its firm with a bit of a give to the skin check for soft spots or indents, Look out for any leaks or cracks in the skin and look to see if leaves are stiff and brown.
Step 3- Inspect the pineapple eyes- Carefully inspect the eyes on the top and bottom of the pineapple, the larger the eyes the longer the pineapple stayed on the plant to get ripe and become sweet.
Step 4- Smell the pineapple- The pineapple should smell a bit sweet but not too sweet if you smell a hint of alcohol or the pineapple smells too sweet, it has over-ripened and is not the one.
Step 5- Tap your pineapple and listen to the sound it makes- a ripe pineapple when tapped will sound weighty and dull but an unripened pineapple will sound hollow.
Step 6- Go home with your ripe delicious and nutritious pineapple and enjoy
Step 7- Store your pineapple on the counter and eat it within 3-5 days you can also refrigerate any pineapple that has been sliced but keep in mind once sliced it is almost impossible to look at and know whether it is past its shelf life and always eat within 6 days.
